SC Department of Education to fund the program
Union County Schools Superintendent Joey Haney, Director of Elementary Education Dr. Stacy Farr, and Jay Childers from the Technology Department appeared on Union County’s Morning Show Tuesday to talk about the new all-day 4K program and a special registration event coming up for that. The 4K program will be funded through the SC Department of Education, providing one class per school initially, with opportunities to expand if the need is there. Students must go to the school for which they are zoned, as the state does not allow out-of-zone requests for this program. Students must qualify for the program based on income, Medicaid eligibility, or screening through the school. There will be a waiting list for those who can’t get in initially, and spaces that may come open will be filled from that list, in addition to the list showing the state the possible need for more classes.
Dr. Farr shared the benefits of a full-day 4K program:

Online registration will open February 27 and go through March 10 for 4K and new 5K students. Those already enrolled in 4K and going to 5K next year will register at a later date. You will need proof of residence, your child’s long-form birth certificate, and immunization records, as well as income verification and/or Medicaid eligibility if applying for 4K. If you need help with the online registration, please come to the special registration event at the Union County Stadium Parking Lot on Tuesday, March 7, from 9-5. Members from the technology department will be on hand to assist with the registration process.
Jay Childers talked about the importance of registration:

Those who complete registration online don’t have to come out to the event, but you may want to come anyway, as they will have community partners with information on services they provide. They will have free hot dogs, chips, and drinks for registering families, and special guest appearances throughout the day. Kona Ice will be on hand, as well. In case of rain, the event will be held in the gym at First Baptist Church on Main Street.
Superintendent Joey Haney said the event is a great idea to reach out to the community and showcase the district’s partnerships:
