Baseball and softball tournaments, Juneteenth celebration, and many more events highlighted
At Wednesday’s meeting of the Union Events Committee, Personnel Director Kindra Horne noted that a risk management seminar will be held sometime in March. It will feature helpful information for those planning events. Timika Wilson with the Union County Community Remembrance Project told those attending that the third annual Juneteenth celebration will take place on Saturday, June 17, this year. She said the event will be moving to later in the afternoon to avoid the worst of the daytime heat. She said it should run from around 4-8 p.m. Kevin Shropshire with the Parks and Recreation Department noted that already 30 baseball and softball tournaments have been booked at The Timken Complex and South Hills this year. He said one of the bigger events is the NSA Girls World Series, scheduled for July 14-16. He said they partnered with Spartanburg and Cherokee counties to host the event, which will feature 380 teams. Billy McBee with the Piedmont Physic Garden noted they are back open for tours, so groups can call and make reservations for a visit. Their main event is the 3rd annual Environmental Art and Music Festival, which will be coming back to Main Street this year on April 22-23. Sandra Sigmon spotlighted the Union County Farm Show, which will be held on Saturday, September 16, from 9-3. It is the 21st year for the event. Don Sawyer will be over the event, taking over from Raymond Sligh. Sigmon noted that more than 1000 people come out each year for the event.
WBCU also has three events planned in the coming months. The first will be the Music and Bantams 5K race at Foster Park, scheduled on Saturday, May 13, at 8:30 a.m. Registration forms will be available soon for that event, which will raise money for the USC Union athletic program. Our annual Senior Citizens Expo is planned for Thursday, May 25, from 9-1 at Tabernacle Baptist Church. All senior citizens will be invited out to visit with our sponsors, listen to live music, eat a free lunch, and possibly win door prizes. The third event will be coming up sometime in August—our annual Union County Pep Rally that WBCU and Holcombe Funeral Home jointly put on for the community. It will be held at the fairgrounds from 5-8 p.m. on a Thursday in August, the exact date to be announced.
