Panthers organization is aware of the charges but will not comment on pending legal matters
Friday morning at 11:22 a.m., a Union County sheriff’s deputy on routine patrol conducted a traffic stop for speeding on a black Mercedes Benz while on Highway 176 near Sams Road. The deputy could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle upon approaching. The driver, identified as 23-year-old Shi Smith, was charged with speeding 86 in a 55 zone, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and unlawful carrying of a handgun. Smith was released on a $6000 surety bond. Smith, a former Union County High School and University of South Carolina football standout, is a wide receiver with the Carolina Panthers. A team spokesperson stated that the organization is aware of the charges and would have no further comment because it is a pending legal matter.
