Half-mile and 1.5-mile hikes to be offered to start the year
Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site is one of many state parks in South Carolina that will offer a First Day Hike on New Year’s Day. Rose Hill is planning two such hikes on Sunday, January 1, 2023. Rangers at Rose Hill will be guiding a ½-mile interpretive trail hike, as well as a 1-1/2-mile hike on the Tyger River Trail. Both hikes will begin at 10 a.m. at the brick kitchen house behind the mansion. Along the way, hikers will learn about slavery, emancipation, and sharecropping.
The hikes will be free with no reservation needed. They ask that you bring water and dress for the weather, wearing comfortable hiking shoes.
The mansion is still decorated for the holiday season throughout the month of December if you want to stop by for a visit. The park grounds are open daily from 9-6 year-round. The mansion is only available by guided tour, which are normally held Thursday through Monday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Each Thursday at 1 p.m., a Voices of the Ancestors walking grounds tour will be held in place of a mansion tour.
Remember, the bridge over the Tyger River on Sardis Road is still closed, so you will need to come to Rose Hill via Highway 49. You can then take Bombing Range Road to Old Buncombe Road to Galilee Church Road back to Sardis Road.
