Events scheduled March 11 and March 18
In March, Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site will present a Women’s History Month series with a couple of free events. On Saturday, March 11, they will host ”Southern Women in Movies: Myths and Misconceptions” at the Union County Carnegie Library. It will begin at 11 a.m. Through movie clips from 1915 to the modern day, discussion will take place about how the cinematic depiction of women of the South has been transformed through the years. As a note to parents, Rose Hill says the movie clips contain graphic violence and racial stereotypes.
The following Saturday, March 18, Rose Hill will host a hands-on workshop at Rose Hill titled “Sewing: Not Just Women’s Work”. In this workshop, volunteers from the Newberry Museum will be on hand to teach some basic sewing skills, such as how to sew on a button and fix a hem. The free, 45-minute class is open to everyone ages 8 and above. Registration is required. They will have sessions at 11:45 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:15 p.m. Light refreshments will be served following the program. The workshop will be on the 2nd level of the mansion, accessible only by climbing up a spiral stairwell. Space is limited, so register soon at southcarolinaparks.com.
