Foundation also pays off Brewington family's mortgage
A national foundation that helps families of first responders, military personnel, and Gold Star families showed its generosity to a local war hero recently. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation paid off the mortgage on the home of US Army Corporal Kevin Brewington as part of the foundation’s 2022 Season of Hope. In addition to paying off the mortgage, the group also installed smart technology throughout the home to help Brewington live more independently. In a statement through Tunnel to Towers, Brewington said, “It will take a financial burden off of our family, and additions that the smart home will add to our home will make it easier on me and make it easier for me as a father.’
Brewington enlisted in the army in 2010 and was deployed to Afghanistan a year later. On September 22, 2011, his unit was returning to base when he triggered an improvised explosive device. He lost both his legs instantly and nearly lost his right arm. Following nearly 50 surgeries and a year and a half of therapy, he medically retired from the Army in 2013. Since then, he has worked to support his fellow veterans serving as an ambassador and working with nonprofits that take veterans on outdoor excursions.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is in the midst of its 4th annual Season of Hope, in which it plans to give away dozens of homes through the end of the year, by paying off mortgages and building smart homes. The foundation was formed in honor and memory of firefighter Stephen Gerard Siller, who was assigned to Brooklyn Squad 1. On September 11, 2001, after finishing his shift, he returned to squad 1 to get his gear after hearing about the attack on the Twin Towers. He then drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, which had been closed for security reasons. He strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others.
